Tyrus was first introduced to skiing when he was 13 years old. His mom took him to Stoney Mountain, a small ski hill close to Stonewall, Manitoba.
Having enjoyed the skiing experience, Tyrus saved his Christmas money that year and bought himself a pair of boots and skis. He frequently used his new skis at a small ski hill about 30 minutes away from his house, known as springhill winter park. He saw the freestyle skiers hitting jumps and trying rails and made the decision quite quickly to stop snowboarding and join the local freestyle club instead.
Tyrus learned the fundamentals of skiing and then progressed to basic rail and jump tricks. He started competing his next season with the club working his way from a developmental athlete to a HI performance athlete which spanned over the next few years. Tyrus found that he enjoyed learning new tricks and progressing in the sport.
